Guitarist Jiji Interviewed by Russell Colburn

WATCH VIDEO: Jiji offered a talk/demonstration via Zoom on February 16, ahead of her livestream concert on February 20.

Jiji (Ji Yeon Kim) is an adventurous artist on both acoustic and electric guitar, playing an extensive range of music from traditional and contemporary classical music to improvisation.

The program for Jiji's free livestream concert included works for acoustic guitar by an array of composers, and most are living artists from several countries. Jiji played two of her own compositions on electric guitar.

View the program list below.

Jiji was just featured in The Washington Post as one of “21 composers and performers who sound like tomorrow.”

The 28-year-old Korean guitarist's impeccable musicianship combined with compelling stage presence and fascinating repertoire earned her First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition. Jiji's music is influenced by her regular activities as a DJ, where she highlights the electronic dance styles of happy hardcore and Berlin experimental electronica.

Applauded by the Calgary Herald as “talented, sensitive…brilliant,” Jiji is a passionate advocate of new music. She has premiered a duo piece Talking Guitars by renowned composer Paul Lansky, released on Bridge Records.

As a chamber musician, Jiji has performed with members of Eighth Blackbird, Bang on a Can All-Stars, Wild Up, and the Aizuri Quartet. Her performances have been featured on PBS, NPR’s From the Top, and Hong Kong broadcast station RTHK’s The Works.

Jiji holds bachelor’s degrees in guitar performance from Korea National University of Arts, the Cleveland Institute of Music, and the Curtis Institute of Music; and a Master of Music degree from the Yale School of Music. She is currently based in Tempe, Arizona where she holds the post of Assistant Professor of Guitar at Arizona State University.
