Use the audio player below to listen to Joyce DiDonato and Yannick Nézet-Séguin talk with the audience following their performance of Schubert’s Winterreise.

Whether she's singing in one of the world's top concert halls or performing for refugees in Greece, Prairie Village native Joyce DiDonato represents the best of the human spirit. The Harriman-Jewell Series is proud to bring our hometown heroine back — this time with one of today's brightest stars, Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who will prove he plays the piano as superbly as he conducts. Nézet-Séguin led The Philadelphia Orchestra for the Harriman-Jewell Series in September.

Schubert’s Winterreise (Winter’s Journey) is a profound meditation on the meaning of life. This will be Joyce DiDonato’s first performance of the work. It is rare to hear the entire cycle performed in concert; it is even more rare to hear it performed by artists of DiDonato and Nézet-Séguin’s caliber.

PROGRAM

SCHUBERT Winterreise, an evening-length song cycle to be performed in German with English supertitles.

Program notes by Joyce DiDonato:

The word “masterpiece” appears often in my line of business, and while the majority of works I participate in unquestionably fall into that category, there still remains THE Masterpieces: those holy relics of unparalleled genius that have changed the course of the art form entirely. Winterreise is this singular, crowning achievement in song.
